I found the cutest DIY on Pinterest via missrenaissance.com — DIY gold foil clay pots for succulents. I thought that this would be perfect for spring and I love succulents so I made my own! I didn’t have any gold foil handy, so I used glitter instead and made spring glitter succulent pots & I love how they turned out.
I bought some clay pots from the hardware store along with a few of the succulents. I was so surprised to find that they sell succulents on amazon, but I guess they do have pretty much everything. I found a succulent “variety pack” in either 9 or 20 count which seemed cute.
I already had paint and glitter from Target and potting soil from my last gardening project. So, I basically already had everything I needed. This project was super easy and took a day with the paint/glue drying times.
Here’s everything you need to make spring glitter succulent pots:
- Clay pots
- Succulents
- Acrylic paint
- Paint primer (optional)
- Paint brushes
- Glitter
- Washi Tape/Painter’s Tape
- Glue
- Potting Soil
Paint the clay pots
I used the primer coat first so that the acrylic paint colors would show up better/more true to their actual color. Then, I painted the clay pots with one coat of acrylic paint, so you could kind of see the while show through in certain areas — this was just personal preference as I thought it looked kind of “vintage/rustic”, but two coats of paint should give a more opaque look.
Tape off the shape/design you want
Once the paint is dry, you’ll tape off areas to create your glitter design. I mostly stuck to triangle shapes when masking off areas; it was easier to create the angles since the pot is narrower at the bottom already. After you tape off the shapes you want, press firmly all along the edges of the tape once more to ensure that no glue gets underneath. You want the seal to be tight so that your design looks very clean.
Apply glue and glitter
I actually just used my finger to spread the glue around in the area that I wanted the glitter to be. Once I had an even coat, I just poured the glitter on top over extra pieces of paper. You want to make sure to dump the glitter over another paper so you can catch the fallout and re-use it or pour it back into the bottle. I got my glitter from target and they had a ton of color options like the Martha Stewart glitters.
Remove tape
After a few hours (I waited almost 6 hours after I pulled the tape too early on one of my pots), remove the tape slowly from the pot. The tape should pull up pretty easily — I just used washi tape and it was super easy to remove.
Pot your plants
When you pot your succulents, you should first lay some pebbles for water drainage. I just put a layer of wood chips in my pots since I didn’t have any small rocks in my yard. Then, just fill the pots halfway with the appropriate soil — succulents like a fast-draining soil. Then place in your succulent & top off with more soil. It’s that easy.
I love how fresh and fun these look & it’s so nice to have extra greenery in the house.
