The iPhone 8, iPhone X, and my iPhone 8 Plus all have a glass backing with an anti-fingerprint coating which looks absolutely gorgeous. I love how sleek my phone looks and feels, but I always have it in a case to keep it protected. Recently I decided to try out a PopSocket on my phone without a case so I could experience the pretty glass sleekness, but with the security of knowing I won’t drop my phone.
WHAT IS A POPSOCKET
If you don’t know, PopSockets are little grips that you can stick to the back of your phone or phone case to help you hold your phone securely or to use your phone as a stand. You can choose from a ton of different colors and designs, or even customize your own PopSockets. They sell PopSockets at a lot of different stores and online; they’re usually between $10 and $15.
POPSOCKET WITHOUT A CASE
If you have an iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X and want to use a PopSockets, you either have to use it with a case or you need to use a special adapter disc. The anti-fingerprint coating on the glass back of these newer iPhones won’t allow the PopSocket to stick, so you can get an adapter included with the newer PopSocket styles or from the PopSocketsĀ website.
If you are using a case, or an older model iPhone, the PopSockets will stick no problem.
WHERE TO POSITION YOUR POPSOCKET
You can reposition your PopSocket multiple times so you don’t need to worry when placing it for the first time. However, if you are using an iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X without a case then you will need to use the transparent disc adapter.
The PopSockets disc is just a super slim clear disc that you stick to the glass backing on your phone. This will give you a grippy foundation to place the actual PopSocket. But the disc can only be repositioned three times before it looses its integrity and won’t stick to your phone anymore. So it is important that you at least get the general area you want to place your PopSocket.
I bought one of the PopSockets Twist which is a kind of conical shape. It’s aluminum so it feels weighty and very sturdy and it comes to a small rounded point, so you can twist your phone. It’s low-key trying to make your phone a fidget spinner which I think is fine. I mostly just thought the aluminum would look cool on my silver/space grey phone.
Because my PopSocket has that little point, I chose to center my disc and PopSocket directly in the middle of my phone. This is a good spot for me where I can reach all the areas on the screen, and also hold my phone easily to take pictures/video.
Having the PopSocket in the middle of the phone also makes it really easy to view my phone horizontally for watching video. With a little stand, I don’t have to find something to prop my phone against while I’m doing my makeup in the morning.
Of course, you can use your PopSocket wherever it feels most comfortable to you. I have found that the lower third of the phone is also a good area for me to place my PopSockets. You can see more of what that placement looks like when I used my Popsocket with my Apple silicone phone case.
Where do you use your PopSocket? Also what do you love about having a PopSocket? I love having a secure grip on my phone and being able to hold my phone in unique ways but still feeling like I’m in control. I do miss my cute case though, so I think I’ll switch back pretty soon.
