Casetify Sequin (Hidden Message) Phone Case Review

I saw that Casetify had released this new sequin phone case and it looked super cute. I ordered my case and it arrived 3 weeks later (I did order two other cases at the same time). Usually it doesn’t take that long for my order to arrive, but these sequin cases are hand-sewn so I guess the processing time is longer. Here’s my review of the Casetify Hidden Message Sequin phone case:

PACKAGING

It looks like Casetify switched up their packaging recently. I’ve bought a lot of phone cases from them in the past, but this is the first time I’ve seen this new style. The box is now just a smooth, white box that says “Casetify” in their new logo/font and the website is at the bottom. The inside of the bottom half of the box is lined with a kind of foam pad instead of the velvet-like liner from before. (Here’s a review of the liquid glitter cases that shows their old packaging).

It’s basically the same packaging but without the “weightiness”/details. You could easily stick on a bow and give as a gift to a friend and it’d be super nice. Plus, it’s what’s on the inside that you really care about.

When I opened my box, I immediately saw a little thank you card and the super shiny, sequin case.

PINK – LOW KEY

You can select from four color options on the Hidden Message Sequin phone case — gold, silver, pink, or red. I chose the pink color which is super pretty. The case definitely shines and reflects a lot of light. The sequins are hand-sewn to what looks like a foam/felt backing that is glued to the phone case.

The contrast of the pink sequins with the black case really pops, but I don’t think it looks as good on my silver/white iPhone 8 Plus as it would on an all black phone.

PERSONALIZATION

The site calls this their “Hidden Message” phone case because the sequins are reversible — when they are flipped backwards, it reveals a word of your choice. You can personalize what you want the hidden message to be — I chose mine to say “brunch” in a pink color. You can pick whatever color you want your text to be and whether it’s vertical or horizontal. You can only choose up to 8 characters though, so you’re limited in the word you can choose.

The reverse color of the sequins you get depends on the main color sequins you chose. Since I chose the pink sequins, the reverse color is white. If you choose the red sequins, the reverse is also white; if you choose the gold or silver, the reverse is black.

The personalization is painted/printed onto the reverse side of the sequins. So, each sequin with text has some portion of it painted.

FIT & PROTECTION

There are little cutouts for the speakers at the bottom and the mute button on the side. The volume and power buttons are protected by the case itself. The cutouts are perfectly lined up and the covered buttons are still really responsive. All of the Casetify cases that I’ve bought have been really good about that.

The sequin case is pretty light weight. Definitely lighter than the glitter cases or the neon sand cases. It’s listed on their site as providing “strong” protection for your phone which is their middle range of protection. The case fits snugly and it curves up slightly over the front of my phone to help keep the screen safe in case of face-down falls.

SEQUIN PHONE CASE REVIEW

Overall, I like the idea of being able to reveal a secret message to your friends while you’re out somewhere and can’t talk out loud. Even if it’s not a “secret” — just having some personalization hidden for yourself is pretty neat.

I really like the feel of the sequins when moving them to reveal the message; they just feel smooth and cool on your hand/fingers. However, I’m concerned that the sequins will get bent or twisted with long-term use. In fact, in the short time I’ve had this case, some of the sequins have twisted so that the painted portion of the sequins is not perfectly aligned.

The painted sequins aren’t perfectly aligned since I’ve been using it & it leaves weird gaps in the text.

I’m not sure how it could be done better, but it bothers me that it looks like that. Plus, just with playing with the case for a little while, some of the sequins have overlapped each other, covering up the painted text parts. I don’t like how easily it gets disturbed.

It’s fun to play with the sequins and reveal your “hidden message”.

The plain side of the sequins is really pretty and catches the light a lot so it’s like I have a little disco ball on my phone. I really like how shiny it is and the texture of the sequins. It’s fun to just play with, but I feel like I’m just messing up the text side even more.

This case is cool and I will definitely keep using it, but I wouldn’t repurchase. If you like shiny sequins and would enjoy the feel of playing with your case all day, and don’t care too much about the message side getting twisted then this would be a good case for you. Otherwise, I’d spend my money on either the liquid glitter cases or the neon sand cases — those are my favorite kinds and they are less expensive.
