With so many fun knitting projects and so many beautiful yarns out there, it can be hard to decide what to cast on next. Now that I’m more comfortable with knitting, I’ve been looking for some more challenging patterns that will be fun to knit, and help me learn more techniques. If you’re looking for some knitting inspiration, here’s a look at the projects that I plan on knitting this year:
KNITTING BACKGROUND
My mom taught me the basics of knitting when I was younger, but I never actually made anything except a few swatches. But last year, I knit my first pair of socks and I loved it. I was inspired to knit more projects and to challenge myself.
The Meadowland Baby Afghan was my first knitting project where I followed a pattern on my own (no YouTube KAL). That was also my first project where I switched between multiple colors; I loved seeing it come together.
Then I decided that I wanted to try to knit a sweater for my niece. I knit the Flax Light Pullover and it was so much fun. It definitely wasn’t perfect, but I learned so much. I felt confident enough to try again and knit the Flax Pullover for myself; my first sweater! I learned more about gauge, swatching, different cast-ons/bind-offs, and using DPNs.
I knew was serious about knitting so I upgraded my toolkit to a ChiaoGoo interchangeable needle set. I love this set so much, and I used it to knit my first color work sweater. I made the Tundra Jumper for my husband and the yoke is beautiful. I even made a sweater for my dog with the same patterns!
Even as I was nearing the end of the Tundra Jumper, I was looking for my next project. I decided to knit the Le Pouf Sweater because I loved the fade-look, and the puffy sleeves. I learned about center-pull yarn rolling, marling, holding fingering weight yarn double, and picking up stitches.
2020 KNITTING PROJECTS
This year, I really want to challenge myself with new stitches and techniques. I learned about the brioche stitch on Instagram, and wanted to try a project with brioche.
Marled Magic Sweater
This sweater looks so fun, and it has so many different sections of stitches. I thought this would be a great way for me to try out some new techniques, and there’s brioche! As the name suggests, this sweater is all about marling so it also uses fingering weight held double. Basically it’s everything I love from other projects and more. I’ve already got my yarn from @sweetnesting, and I’m excited to make this sweater.
UPDATE: I finished my Marled Magic Sweater – check out my knitting experience!
Tundra Sweater
Like I mentioned, I’ve already knit this for my husband (and a mini version for my dog), and I want to make one for myself! I ordered some beautiful yarn from Camilla Vad that I think is going to look beautiful! I was inspired by her test knit on Ravelry, so I hope I can recreate it.
UPDATE: I just finished my Tundra Sweater; check out my post about my experience.
Briochevron Blanket
This blanket looked like a fun challenge. I would love to have this squishy brioche blanket, but I think it will be even more fun to make. The chevron pattern isn’t actually my favorite, but I think, with the right colors, it could be perfect for me.
UPDATE: I finished my Briochevron Blanket!! Check out my knitting experience.
DK Toe Up Brioche Socks
These socks seem so fun; socks and brioche together! I think these would be challenging since they are small and knit in the round. They are also knit toe-up which I’ve never done before.
Ripple Bralette
This bralette/tank top looks so delicate and cute. I think it would be pretty fast to knit since it’s so small. I never really thought of lightweight/summer knitwear so I thought this would be pretty fun to make.
Pengweeno
This is the cutest little cardigan! I think I will make this for my niece near the end of the year. I love the textures and the different stitches. I think it’ll be a fun challenge, but also go by quickly since it’s child-size!
