The Classic Ribbed Hat is a simple and easy knit that comes in a lot of sizes. I knit one for my niece and I am really happy with how it turned out. Keep reading for my experience knitting the Classic Ribbed Hat by Purl Soho.
Yarn
Most of my yarn is fingering weight and when I have enough leftovers, I usually try to incorporate it all into a large scrappy project with a few skeins of DK to tie it together. But I had this one skein of Hedgehog Fibres Merino DK that I wanted to use for something fun.
This is the same yarn I used in the Moby Mini Sweater that I made for my niece, but in the Flamingo colorway. This color is more saturated than the Harajuku color I used in her sweater.
I like this yarn because it’s light, but warm and easy to work with. It has a nice twist, isn’t splity, and it’s super soft. I also used the Aran version of this yarn in my Shamrock Honeycomb Aran and loved working with it for showing cable stitch definition.
Classic Ribbed Hat Pattern
I thought it would be fun to knit a simple beanie for my niece since it was finally starting to get cold in the early mornings. I searched Ravelry and found this free Classic Ribbed Hat pattern by Purl Soho.
The Classic Ribbed Hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. This pattern has sizes from Baby to Adult Large and most can be made with just one skein of DK (100g/200m) yarn.
Provisional Cast On
I used a crochet hook to cast on a tubular provisional cast on with waste yarn, using directions from the October Hat (also a free pattern). I cast on 49 stitches on my US 3 Chiaogoo needles on a 8″ cable.
Once the foundational rows were complete, I knit one row of K1/P1 ribbing before joining in the round with a K2TOG, resulting in the 96 stitches for the Kid size.
Ribbing
I knit the K1/P1 ribbing in the round for 7″ as called for in the pattern. This was a quick and easy knit that I enjoyed working on in the evenings while watching a show.
Decreases/Crown
I had to improvise a little to get the decreases done since I didn’t have the proper tools. I had started out using my US 3 needles from my Chiaogoo interchangeable set on a 8″ cable. This was perfect for the ribbing on the body and I was able to complete some of the decreases.
But as the circumference decreased, I had to move to my shorties needles and mine only start at US 4. I knit a few rounds on the US 4 shorties needles on a 5″ cable. But even that could only get me so far and I eventually had to move to DPNs. I don’t have a lot of DPN sizes — so I used my closest size, US 2.
The tension is a little weird, but I think it’ll be fine for my niece. I love the color and how stretchy it is. I think she will love it.
This was a fun and easy knit. I’ll definitely reach for this pattern for a quick one-skein project. Check out my Ravelry to see what other projects I’m working on.
