I ordered this Paper Mate InkJoy gel pen pack as a birthday gift to myself. The bright colors and the retractable point are my favorite features. They write beautifully and look great in my Erin Condren Life Planner. I compare the smearing/smudging of the Paper Mate InkJoy gel pen with the Pilot G-2 pen in my review —>
Paper Mate InkJoy Gel Pen Review
Pen
The pen has a good grip and it’s comfortable in the hand. The casing has a transparent section so you can view the ink level. The plastic is light weight; it also adds an element of shine and brings interest to the pen. There is a retractable click at the top which I love because I don’t have to think about ink leaking in my purse or needing to find the lid. There is a clip on the side of the pens which is convenient, but one of my first pens had the clip break on the third day I had it :/
Ink/Gel
The gel is amazing. The colors are vibrant & beautiful and they dry super quickly. I did a quick smear test for comparison against my Pilot G-2 .07 pen and there was basically no contest. The Pilot G-2 has the most smudging after one second of drying time, and some after three seconds of drying time, but the Paper Mate InkJoy gel pen had no smudging/none that I could see.
The ink flows smoothly and it isn’t scratchy to write. Because the gel dries so quickly, there aren’t pools of color everywhere. I haven’t noticed any kind of build-up on the tip of the pen yet. I had a 6-pack of colors before and I am still loving them — it’s been about a month and I haven’t had any issues after daily use.
The pens come with a little plastic nub of the tip of each pen to keep the gel from drying out. It’s super easy to remove with your fingernails or gently rubbing the pen tip over a sheet of paper.
Color
There are 14 vibrant colors in the pack I bought from Amazon. I was excited to find them on Amazon at $5 less expensive than at my Target. Plus, I have Prime with Amazon, so I got free 2-day shipping — get a 30-day Amazon Prime free trial through my link. The pink is my absolute favorite of all of the colors. All of the colors write smoothly are the color is legible even with the yellow. The dark blue is perfect for school/work. I like to color code all of my notes and these colors make it fun.
If they had these in .5 size/fine point, I would totally get those as well, but the color pack is only available in .7/medium point. I love these pens and the colors are so vibrant; they would be great to use in a coloring book or in a planner — like my Erin Condren Life Planner.
Definitely check out these pens if you’re looking for bright color option gel pens that won’t smear all over the place.
